At TCI, we often meet individuals who are unsure whether they need an executive coach or a counselor. The two professions can appear similar from a distance – but their purposes, methods, and outcomes are distinct.
As ICF-certified coaches, we’re committed to preserving the integrity of the coaching profession while helping you discern the right support for your journey.
According to the International Coaching Federation (ICF), coaching is “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.”
This means that executive coaching is:
+ Client-led: You bring the agenda. Your coach brings presence, deep listening, and powerful questions.
+ Future-focused: Coaching isn’t about solving past issues. It’s about unlocking your potential and achieving your goals.
+ Action-oriented: Through the coaching process, you’ll clarify your vision, identify next steps, and take meaningful action toward transformation.
At TCI, our coaches create a safe, supportive space where you can think freely, wrestle with complexity, and move toward purpose—all within a confidential, empowering relationship.
While coaching looks ahead, counseling is primarily concerned with the past and present. Counseling (or therapy) is a clinical relationship focused on healing emotional pain, trauma, or psychological dysfunction.
Counselors are licensed to diagnose and treat mental health conditions; coaches are not.
Here’s a simple breakdown:
Coaching
Counseling
Forward-looking
Past and present focused
Performance and potential
Healing and recovery
Client is creative, resourceful, and whole
Client may need clinical support
Not licensed for mental health
Licensed mental health professionals
No diagnosis
May include diagnosis and treatment
Goal- and action-oriented
Exploratory and therapeutic
At TCI, we deeply value counseling as a powerful form of support. In fact, we have counselors on our team, but we also collaborate with and refer clients to mental health professionals when appropriate.
As ICF-certified coaches, we’re bound by a clear set of ethical standards that include:
+ Confidentiality: What’s shared in coaching stays in coaching.
+ Respect for the client’s autonomy: We don’t give advice or tell you what to do. We believe you hold the answers.
+ Commitment to growth: We continually invest in training and feedback to enhance our coaching presence and impact.
+ Clarity of roles: We ensure you understand what coaching is (and isn’t), so expectations are aligned from day one.
These values ensure that our coaching relationships are marked by trust, clarity, and respect.
If you’re feeling:
Stuck or unclear about your next step
Ready to level up your leadership, relationships, or spiritual life
Hungry for accountability and growth
Curious about who you are becoming
…then coaching could be exactly what you need.
And if your needs are more about healing pain, navigating trauma, or managing anxiety or depression, then counseling may be a better fit—and we can help connect you with the right team member and resources.
Coaching isn’t about fixing you—it’s about freeing you.
At TCI, we believe you were made for purpose. Coaching is a powerful, Spirit-led way to align your inner life with the outer life you’re meant to live.
